Trained in the field of Rhetoric (the academic study of how public knowledge is shaped, shared, and changed by way of discourse), Van E. Hillard has taught intellectual and academic writing for forty years, has directed the writing programs at Duke University and Davidson College, and has published work on the teaching of writing, the reception of US memorials, the settlement house movement in the 19th century, and public responses to the HIV-AIDS pandemic.
