About the Event

How can we resist efforts to ban books in our public schools and libraries? For Davidson College’s Scott Denham, the answer was to teach the banned material in a free online class. In January 2022, the school board in McMinn County, Tennessee banned Art Spiegelman’s Maus from the middle school curriculum. In response, Dr. Denham offered a class to McMinn County 8th grade and high school students, who read and discussed Maus together.

Event Details

Scott Denham is the Dana Professor of German Studies at Davidson College. His areas of expertise include Germany and the Holocaust. He will speak to us about his experience teaching Maus to his McMinn County students, the growing threat of censorship in our public institutions, and the role that teachers can play in resisting book bans and protecting free speech.

Date: Wednesday, November 9

Time: 1:00 pm
