About the Event

“Technology giveth and technology taketh away, and not always in equal measure,” media scholar Neil Postman presciently warned about the Faustian bargain every generation has to strike with the preeminent technology of its time.  It was television for him in 1987.  For many of us, that metamedia is in the internet or perhaps AI.

Thinking back and looking forward, Dr. Min Jiang, Ph.D., Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, will lead a broad conversation about the multifaceted impact of the internet on society.  Sampling work from media psychology, political communication, cultural studies and political economy, the talk will provide an opportunity to discuss issues ranging from social comparison, political polarization, cultural memes, and platform monopolies to an uncertain future of AI.
