Annie Merrill will speak from her recently published book Flora’s Interpreters: Popular Botany in Nineteenth-Century America, discussing how people in the early United States learned about and interacted with plants. Rich visual images accompany narratives of the botanical activities of people such as writer-activist Henry David Thoreau and Annie Adams Fields, wife of a leading literary publisher in mid-century Boston. You’ll also learn about how a young schoolteacher in remote northern California and a contract surgeon for the US Army during the Civil War botanized in interesting places. This presentation will appeal to anyone interested in the significance of plants for early American conservation, citizen science, and creative expression.
