About the Event

The DeMell Jacobsen Collection is one of the finest privately held collections of American art in the United States. In the first show of its kind, the Mint Museum presents works from the collection in a single exhibition. The show includes Colonial- era portraits; landscape painting, still lives and genre scenes from the 19th century; and works by American painters who studied and worked in Europe in the decades leading up to the 20th century. Artists represented include Benjamin West, Thomas Cole, Jasper Francis Cropsey, Childe Hassam, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, and many more. The Mint is the first venue for this exhibition, which will eventually travel to four other museums.

The Mint’s Senior Curator of American Art, Dr. Jonathan Stuhlman, co-curated the American Made exhibit. He will speak to us about the DeMell Jacobsen Collection, how the land and people of our new nation influenced the work of American artists, and how American paintings and sculpture contribute to our understanding of ourselves as Americans.
