Housing Inequality and the Racial Wealth Gap in Charlotte

In 2014, a team of Harvard researchers ranked the Charlotte metro region last among the country's 50 largest cities in economic mobility, generally defined as the chances of improving one's economic status beyond that of one's parents. While much of the focus on economic mobility has been on income disparities, researchers and policy experts are increasingly highlighting the role that wealth plays, with a particular focus on the racial wealth gap and how the legacy of systemic racism has perpetuated that gap over the decades through discriminatory policy practices at the local, state, and federal levels, including housing. Researchers from UNC Charlotte's Urban Institute will share their recent work on the racial wealth gap, its historical roots, and the ways in which it continues to shape the demographic and economic geography of Mecklenburg County.
