Our curriculum plans
DavidsonLearns seeks to enhance the intellectual life of adults (18 or older) by providing a selection of challenging, diverse, and relevant courses and, in so doing, form a community of learners. It is our belief that educational experiences provide a common ground where people come together with shared goals, expectations and vulnerabilities. DavidsonLearns offers regular courses, lasting roughly four to eight weeks, during our academic year (September through the following June). We also offer shorter or longer events throughout the year often with topics connected to cultural events, such as film festivals, concert series, or exhibitions, as well as other activities of interest to adult learners.
Our volunteer faculty are motivated by their desire to share their knowledge and facilitate thoughtful discussions on academic and cultural topics. They include current and emeriti faculty from area colleges and universities as well as others who are experts in their fields of interest. If you are interested in offering a course, please submit a Course Proposal to us or click Contact Us and enter a Comment indicating your interest in speaking to a member of the curriculum committee.
Course fees are generally established by how many weeks a course meets. Fees help defray the costs of facility rental, administrative costs for the organization, equipment and supplies that instructors use, office supplies, marketing expenses, and a token honorarium for instructors. All members of the Board of Directors are uncompensated volunteers. Anyone for whom the course fee is a barrier to enrolling should contact the Executive Director, Amy Diamond, about the possibility of a scholarship.
Everyone who registers for a regular course during an academic year must become a member of DavidsonLearns for that academic year. Memberships are valid for the entire academic year and our membership fee must be paid in addition to the course fee when you register for the first course you wish to take during an academic year. Membership may also be required for some DavidsonLearns events or members may receive a discount on event fees. Go to the Membership page for details.
